June 19 field trip
I am calling out to all parents who would be willing to volunteer on June 19 for our Mitford Pond Wetland study. You would be needed from 10:15 to noon. Only for a short time, but the appreciation we would feel would be endless! Please contact me if this is a possibility for you! I hope to talk to you soon!
Field Trip-Fish Creek Park
Tomorrow (June 12) is our exciting field trip to Fish Creek Park!! All of our students and parent volunteers need to be here about five minutes before bell time (8:05) as we have to drive away at 8:10. We will be having a fun filled adventure lead by Sue from the archeology department at U of C. It should be tons of fun! We should arrive back at Mitford no later than 2:30pm. I would like to thank all parents who volunteered for this trip. I look forward to having you there and getting to know you better. If you have any questions about additional details, please feel free to contact me. Thanks! See you there!

LA
Just a little update about what is going on in LA. Right now we are all reading some awesome Eric Wilson mystery novels. As we read within our groups, we are completing a variety of question sheets and activities about what we have just read. This unit is very intriguing and gives the students a chance to work at their pace within a group of peers. Parents be prepared. The unit ends off with a large project that the students will have to complete and hand in. Projects may vary but the due date will be posted shortly.
Science
We have just finished our amazing weather unit and are about to begin Wetlands!!!! Each student recieved a study guide for their weather exam and hopefully studied very hard as I made sure it directly followed the exam!!! I am very excited to enter this new unit as we are going to learn many things and have tons of fun doing it! If anyone has any questions about this new unit please feel free to ask me.

Science
I am sure many parents have noticed the decrease in homework in our science class. I just wanted to write a quick note to let you know there is a very good reason for this. Although it is very important to be able to write out a correct lab, I feel science at the grade five level should be about exploring, learning and even fun. Right now we are learning about weather and this unit allows for a lot of discussion and many practical activities to learn from the environment around us. I feel confident that the amount of knowledge taken in has not decreased with the amount of written work. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Thank you!

Science
We have just finished our electricity unit and will be begining our Weather unit shortly. As I finished my marking I noticed there are still students who have not handed in certain labs. These labs are all over two weeks late and if not returned by friday, students will be recieving a zero. Students are all aware of what they are missing but parents, if you could check bags, bedrooms or binders to ensure this will not happen to your child. Most of these assignments were nearly completed in class so there is no excuse for them not being turned in. hese are the labs I am mising from some students;
- Series/Parallel Symbols Worksheet
- In a Flash
- A Field to Remember
- Short Circuits
- A Magnetic Expirience
Thank you very much!
Math
In math we have just began our Decimals unit. Right now we are learning place value and how to convert fractions into decimals. There is no home thus far but please parents, practice with your children at home as they are finding these concepts very difficult!
Report Cards
Please any students who have yet to return their report card envelopes and Learning Habits at Home sheet, please bring them in immediatly. Thank you.

Math
The students are creating exams as a study tool for their friends. This will help them review while making the exam and while completing someone else's. Our actual in class exam is on Wednesday, April 18, 2007. Here are the requirements for their own exams:
- Pictoral questions to fractions (4)
- Words to fractions (8)
- Equivalent fractions (4)
- Compare fractions (greater than or less than) (3)
- Pick one fraction and give four equivalent fractions. (1)
- Your choice (3)
The students can "decode" these requirements if they seem confusing. Have fun!

Spring Break
I hope everyone is enjoying their time off! I know I am! Relax, have fun and don't even think about school!! I'll see you in a week!!
Science
Since I have assigned no homework over the holidays, sit back and relax!! Here is your warning; your lab A Magnetic Expirience will be due soon after.
Math
There is no assigned homework for the holidays. Since there is a Fractions final exam on Wednesday, April 18th, I would suggest at least reviewing your fractions. For the best review, look at pages 375-383 in the textbook ( most should have taken them home because we already had this talk in class). Pick the two pages that you need the most help on and see how you do!

Art
We began by learning about shading techniques and using them to create beautiful and stylistic apples (which were due last week for anyone who may have forgotten). Every bunch of apples need a comfy basket to be displayed in so we are continuing this project with a little bit of structured weaving. Please take your time and do your best with all of your art projects. They have the potential to be something you can show off. A little advice for your next project; keep looking for cool things out your window!
Science
As all of you know, we know everything about electricity and then some! While we are still in this unit we will be making a small shift to magnetism. Look for labs using electromagnets and lots of fun with conductors and insulators. Did you think lemon juice was only good for lemonaid? How about lighting a lightbulb?
Math
We are knee deep into our Fraction unit right now. The students seem to be catching on very quickly and they keep impressing me with their willingness to participate. For homework this weekend they were to work in their booklets on the page focused on equivalent fractions. This is due for Tuesday as we will be moving on to irreducable fractions and comparing fractions.
Language Arts
For the last two weeks we have been hard at work on our poetry unit. Every week we have been learning and writing poems using a variety of poetic devices and parts of speech. By the end of this unit each student will have compiled an anthology of their own peotic creations. So far we have added five poems to our anthologies. Including; metaphor, similie, five senses, alliteration, onomatopoeia and personification. This next week we will learning about hyperbole, diamante and haiku.
Spelling
Every week I will be posting the spelling words to aid in your child's study time. We begin with a pre-test every Monday morning to introduce the list of the week to the students. The spelling test will be last period (period Five) every friday.
Here I Am!!
Here I am as promised! Thank you all for being so patient while I get everything organized and in order. As you can imagine this sudden opportunity has been both exciting and overwhelming. My name is Mrs. Sobbi and I am so excited to be the new grade five Teacher at Mitford Middle School! So far I am loving every moment and I know it's only going to get better. I would love to tell you a little bit about myself. I have been employed with the Rocky View School Division for almost four years both as a full time Teacher and a Substitute Teacher. I must admit that I loved both jobs equally. While in a full time classrom I am able to cultivate relationships and develope fun and creative lesson plans, as a sub I was priviledged to have a variety of amazing expiriences while getting to meet and learn from many incredible people.
I have recieved two degrees from the University of Calgary; My first in Fine Arts and my second in Education. I must admit I loved attending University and wouldn't mind going back in a few years!
During the last four years not only have I gained valuable expiriences but my husband and I have also added two beautiful little girls to our family! Other than spending my time close to the ground (they are 16 months and three years old) I enjoy a wide variety of activities. Waterskiing, dancing, singing, ultimate frisbee, painting and traveling are just the beginning. Anything fun appeals to me.
Now you know a little bit about me, I cannot wait to get to know all of you! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, my door is always open.
